Jair Bolsonaro has been arrested after authorities found he posed a definite escape threat while under home confinement.

The one-time leader was sentenced of orchestrating a military coup in last fall and handed more than a 27-year term in jail, but he remained under home detention pending court reviews.

High Court Judge Alexandre de Moraes said the decision to arrest the 70-year-old politician was a preventative measure after fresh information were revealed.

This involved trying to remove his electronic bracelet and a call for a public vigil that could facilitate a potential flight.

Legal Document Reveals Escape Concerns

In a document approving the custody, Justice Moraes said intelligence from the centre monitoring his home detention suggested the ex-president's plan to remove the tracking monitor to guarantee victory in his flight.

This, it said, would be assisted by the chaos caused by the gathering called by his child.

His child, his son Flávio, who works as a congressional representative, called for a gathering of his followers near his father's house to take place on Saturday night.

Flávio Bolsonaro wrote on social media on the previous day: "Are you going to fight for your nation, or see it all from your mobile device there on your settee? I invite you to struggle with us."

He said the demonstration would be so followers could offer prayers for his physical condition and for the return of democracy in our land."

Diplomatic Refuge Fears

Part of the judge's determination was the chance of his "relocation to embassies near the residence, considering that the probes revealed a record of arranging to seek refuge through a diplomatic representation", a declaration said.

The judicial paperwork highlights that the United States embassy in the capital, Brazil's capital, is positioned around 13km from Bolsonaro's home.

Worldwide Consequences

Bolsonaro's legal woes have drawn the ire of fellow conservative nationalist United States President Trump, causing him to enact a half-rate duty on goods coming from Brazil.

The former president is being held in a national police facility in Brasilia and will undergo a detention review on the following day.

Recent Judicial Appeals

It was only on Friday that the his legal team asked the High Court to permit him to complete his entire prison term under home confinement, with electronic monitoring.

They also requested that he be permitted to depart his residence for healthcare, saying he demanded ongoing care for pulmonary infections and other ailments.

Context of Sentencing

Bolsonaro was found guilty of orchestrating a plot aimed at maintaining his control after he lost the 2022 election to his ideological adversary, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

High Court judges said that he had knowledge of a plan which included plans to murder his opponent and his VP candidate, his vice-presidential candidate, and to detain and kill Justice Moraes - the Supreme Court justice who has been overseeing the former president's case.

The conspiracy was prevented because it couldn't obtain the endorsement of the army and air force commanders. His successor was sworn in without incident on the first day of 2023.

But a seven days after, on the eighth of January, thousands of his followers invaded and destroyed government buildings in the federal district, Brazil's capital.

The security forces intervened and around fifteen hundred individuals were taken into custody.

The justices found that the demonstrators had been provoked by Bolsonaro whose plan, they said, was for the national armed forces to intervene, restore order and reinstate his authority.

At the period, Bolsonaro's lawyers called the 27 years and three months sentence "absurdly excessive.

He was also barred from running for public office until twenty-sixty - eight years later after the conclusion of his imprisonment.

The one-time head of state called the court case a "witch hunt and said it was aimed at blocking him participating in the next presidential race.
